A space where you see no smoking does not mean clean air: particles and compounds leak silently from building materials and operations, and occupants carry them in their throats. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a science of measurement and ventilation that decides the health of a place before its appearance.
1. IAQ as part of IEQ
Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) covers heat, light, sound, and air together (lesson 4.3). Indoor air quality (IAQ) is the specific scope: the purity of a building’s air from chemical, biological, and particulate pollutants, and the sufficiency of ventilation in diluting them. IEQ is composed of its pillars, and IAQ is the air at its center.
2. Indoor air pollutants and their sources
The pollutants divide by their source, and the most important axis is the indoor one:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOC): they evaporate from paints, adhesives, materials, and new furniture; some compounds among them, such as formaldehyde, irritate the eyes and the respiratory system.
- Particulate matter (PM): dust, fibers, and fine particles from equipment, operations, and activity.
- Carbon dioxide (CO₂): an indicator of ventilation sufficiency under occupancy (see the measurement in 4.3).
- Humidity and mold: from leaks and condensation; biological spores that harm everyone with sensitivities.
- Tobacco smoke and combustion byproducts: kept out by strict control within the building envelope.
The main indoor air pollutants and their sources
Volatile organic compounds (VOC)
Evaporating from paints, adhesives, and new furniture; formaldehyde irritates the eyes and breathing.
Particulate matter (PM)
Dust, fibers, and fine particles from equipment, operations, and daily activity.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
An indicator of ventilation sufficiency under occupancy — a rise signals insufficient airflow.
Humidity and mold
From leaks and condensation; biological spores harming people with sensitivities.
Smoke and combustion byproducts
Kept out through strict envelope control and a ban on indoor smoking.
Always the dual treatment: prevent the pollutant at the source (low-emission materials), then dilute what remains with ventilation.
On the source: the best practice is always dual: prevent the pollutant at the source (low-emission materials), then dilute what remains with ventilation. Neither alone is sufficient.
3. Ventilation and the reference standard ASHRAE 62.1
Ventilation brings in fresh air and dilutes pollutant concentrations, and the best-known reference standard for it is ASHRAE 62.1, which sets minimum outdoor-air rates according to the space type and its occupancy. A practical reminder from lesson 4.3: rising carbon dioxide (CO₂) during a crowded meeting in a poorly ventilated room is evidence of insufficient airflow — and the cure is to adjust the airflow, not to mask the symptom.
4. Prevention strategies: materials, filtration, and flush-out
- Low-emission (low-VOC) materials: paints, flooring, and furniture with the lowest emissions at purchase — a decision that precedes occupancy.
- Filtration and operation: filters at appropriate levels, scheduled replacement, and ventilation on the occupancy schedule.
- Building flush-out: intensive ventilation with outdoor air before occupying a new building or wing to outgas the emissions of new materials.
- Operational monitoring: periodic CO₂ and humidity measurements and handling complaints through a ticketing system — quality is achieved continuously, not on an inspection day.
Myth: “An air freshener succeeds in hiding the source of odors.” Fact: The freshener adds pollutants to already polluted air; sensory masking does not cure the cause — engineering diagnosis of the ventilation and the source is the real treatment.

Summary
- IAQ is a specific scope within IEQ: air purity and adequate ventilation for occupant health.
- The main pollutants: emitting materials (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), carbon dioxide, humidity and mold, and smoke.
- The dual treatment: low-emission materials at the source + diluting ventilation — neither alone suffices.
- ASHRAE 62.1 sets the ventilation rates, and measurements (CO₂, humidity) are read in its light.
- Flush-out before occupancy and periodic monitoring afterward prove that quality is a continuous practice, not an inspection-day event.
