Common misconception

(Reliability).
(Maintainability).

Professional tip

The statistical distribution developed by the Swedish scientist Waloddi Weibull is a cornerstone of reliability engineering: with a single parameter — the shape parameter beta (β) — mathematics tells you the nature of the failure and which tactic succeeds and which wastes money. This lesson connects the number to the decision.

1. The shape parameter beta (β) determines the tactic

  • β less than 1 — infant mortality: the failure rate decreases with time; the causes are installation defects, part quality issues, or assembly contamination. Tactic: quality control, careful commissioning, and trial run testing — and time-based preventive maintenance here is harmful because it returns the equipment to the danger point! Example: beta 0.65 in hydraulic pumps.
  • β equal to 1 — random failure: a constant rate independent of operating hours (the exponential distribution) — electronics and complex systems. Scheduled replacement every 6 months does not reduce the probability: the new valve may fail after 3 days just like the old one. Tactic: condition-based monitoring (CBM) or run-to-failure (RTF) for non-critical assets.
  • β greater than 1 — wear-out: a rate that rises with age, resembling the normal distribution at β ≈ 3.5. Only here does time-based preventive maintenance (Time-Based PM) succeed: replace before the inevitable cliff. Example: coal conveyor brake linings at beta 3.8 with a characteristic life of 5000 hours.

Opposite it stands the scale parameter eta (η) — the characteristic life: the point in time at which 63.2% of the equipment population is expected to have failed.

Three failure-rate behavior zones by the shape parameter beta (β)

Infant mortality β < 1
time failure rate

A declining rate over time — causes are installation and part quality. Time-based PM is harmful here.

Random failure β = 1
time failure rate

A constant rate independent of age (exponential) — condition monitoring or RTF for non-critical assets.

Age-related wear-out β > 1
time failure rate

A rising rate with age (approximating the normal at β ≈ 3.5) — scheduled replacement before the cliff.

Beta shapes the failure-rate curve and therefore the tactic that works: declining (infant), constant (random), or rising (wear-out).

Common misconception

Myth: “Early periodic replacement always raises reliability in all equipment.” Fact: in infant mortality it increases failures, and in random failure it changes nothing — it is only worthwhile in age-related wear-out where a predictable wear-at-out cliff exists.

2. Readiness measures: MTBF, MTTR, and inherent availability

Three equations no CMRP exam is without:

  • Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) = total operating hours ÷ number of failures — the measure of reliability.
  • Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) = total repair downtime hours ÷ number of failures — the measure of maintainability.
  • Inherent availability (Ai) = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR) × 100% — the readiness ratio excluding preventive stoppages and spare parts delays.

Solved problem: a gas turbine operated 6000 hours with 3 failures and 30 repair hours — MTBF = 6000 ÷ 3 = 2000 hours, MTTR = 30 ÷ 3 = 10 hours, and availability = 2000 ÷ 2010 = 99.5%, a world-class level exceeding 98%.

3. The ideal mix and raising availability from both sides

No single tactic fits everything — the optimal mix distributes by beta and criticality: quality assurance and commissioning for infant mortality, condition monitoring for random and critical failures, scheduled replacement for confirmed wear-out, and run-to-failure for simple assets with little impact.

Professional tip

To raise availability, work on both sides together: increase MTBF through reliability and proactive maintenance that prevents failure recurrence, and reduce MTTR through maintainability — advance planning, pre-kitted work packages (Kitting), spare parts availability, and technician training. Neglecting either side collapses availability no matter how strong the other is.

(Random Failure)

(Ai = MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR))

(World-Class)

  • Ai = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR):

Summary

  • β less than 1 is infant mortality: quality, commissioning, and trial runs, not time-based maintenance.
  • β equal to 1 is constant random failure: CBM or run-to-failure, and scheduled replacement is waste.
  • β greater than 1 is increasing wear-out (≈ 3.5 normal distribution): scheduled replacement before the cliff — and only here it succeeds.
  • Eta (η) is the characteristic life at which 63.2% of the population fails.
  • Ai = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR): raise the numerator with reliability and lower the denominator with prepared repair speed.
